It means what network youre on for data, for example, if your in high speed area, you will see EV or 3G, if you are in a 1x area, it means you are in an area where your data speed is comparable to dial up.----i work at a major cell phone carrier. Rural areas are generally 1x, but soon hopefully the whole counrty will be at 3G or EVDO speed!!
