I was having this same issue and was driving me insane I would try to do something and it wouldn't let me, I tried just ending all apps or things I had open but that didn't work….I never turned my phone off before and then I read somewhere that this was caused by the internal computer having background apps running that you can't turn off…so anyway…i have started to turn my phone off in the night time before I plug it in, and for the last month I have not received that error at all!! I guess shutting the phone off releases all those stored apps running in the background.

It depends on the app. Most text free apps that are free usually have a 15 message limit. The paid-for apps usually are unlimited.
I think a good answer for the question is prob. 10+
The main disadvantage is the extra cost if you exceed your allowance. Extra units on top of your capped limit are usually expensive compared to the normal unit cost, as the idea is you stay inside your capped limit.
Many of the carriers don't offer unlimited data plans but will offer those with unlimited texting. Just be aware of the difference in those types of plans. Verizon and Sprint have great plans that don't put a limit on texting and those start around $50 per month. It will depend how many phone lines you have and I believe most carriers have a maximum allowed number of lines of six.
