Sorry love but those are just man's words so you wouldn't think that his a bad man, husband or maybe a father? If this man really, really feels bad he wouldn't start the affair, the words " really trying" is for you to believe him and feel bad for him. Sweetie, its a con and your buying it by feeling sad for him. Don't let him make you the source of his infidelity to his wife. You need to tell him stop because you don't want to be the part time woman in his life. Don't loose your self respect because of him
