It is an anti-hedionism sentiment that started in the 1970-80's. Many of the Straight Edgers also are vegan or vegitarian. Some times it is represented in a trio of x's in flyers or tattoos in the form xXx. Some Straight edge bands even use it in their name like xDEATHSTARx this can be applied to names as well. It is abreviated sXe and hardcore punk is sometimes abreviated hXc.
When you go to Bars, Casinos, Concerts or Clubs. Before, they would put X's with permanent marker on people's (under 21) back of their hands to show that they are not old enough for alcohol or anything like that. But since, lot of people wash them off in the bathroom. Nowadays, they put people 21 or over with wristbands. Some clubs, concerts,.etc still give the X's though.
