"Fine-feathered friend" seems to have been, all along, a compliment to humans by allusion to a bird with beautiful plumage. The loss of the hyphen over time has simply clouded a very nice metaphor.
If someone is mean to you then don't call them your friend. This person obviously doesn't appreciate you if they are mean to you.

It is correct if it is what you intend to say. If you mean that your friend heard something, and then related it to you, you can say that it was heard by a friend. Your friend heard it. If you mean that YOU heard something, and you heard it because your friend told you, then you heard it from a friend.
