A damselfly tattoo symbolises the freedom of the people of Odonata. Some tribes from the area believed that a damselfly represented a hope for their diminishing people. Because they believed this, they worshipped the damselfly in a variety of ways, one of which was having a damselfly imprinted on their skin with body paint. However, after a while the tribes wanted a more permanent way of imprinting the image on their skin. Because tattoos had not been invented, they branded the image onto their bodies, usually on the small of their back or their buttock.
