I am gay and have often thought what I would say if a girl asked me out. I would probably say directly 'I don't think it would work, sorry' and then find somewhere quiet afterwards to explain.

If there is nobody around you might want to explain straight away. If you don't explain to him he will probably get discouraged, and make sure you make it clear you can still be friends.

If you don't want people to know you are a lesbian consider if the person who asked to go out with you is trustworthy. If they are I'm sure it would make them feel better if you told them, but if they aren't you might just say 'I don't feel ready' or 'I need to concentrate on other things (such as study, work etc.)'.

Try not to hurt their feelings as this can be very discouraging and damaging for their self-esteem.
