sometimes there will be writing as well. Such numbers will be the the Serial Number(s). Possibly on the same line or above or below will be a Model number, and or, Model Name or designation. There might be the Caliber or Guage or Bore of the firearm. In the case of shotguns, the length of the barrel's Chambre will be present; IE; 2 1/2", 3", 3 1.4" , etc; so as to warn the User not to incorrectly chamber a shell of the wrong size which is easlily and dangerously done. Much the same applies to the firearm action regarding numbers and writing. Go to the page, then click on the type of shotgun it is - there are 15 types - and then reading the page for that gun's serial numbers. Look for the series of serial numbers that includes the one you are interested in: #48162.

That depends on the manufacturer. Different brands can have different lengths of serial numbers.
If you call out shotgun it means you get the front passanger seat in the vehicle.
The number 1400 refers to the Model number of your Winchester shotgun.
