Slaves in America work on plantations plowing seeding and harvesting or were house slaves working like servants for no pay
They were planters, gardeners, worked in the horse stables, and if their owner wanted them to, they could work a regular job, such as, at a shipbuilding factory.

Slaves in the United States did nearly every possible kind of labor. Thousands of slaves worked in fields tending cotton and tobacco. Slaves also worked on docks and railroads. Slaves helped build Washington DC, including the White House and Capitol. Slaves were household servants. Some slaves were hired out to neighbors when there was not enough work on a farm or plantation. Slaves also did a huge number of skilled and semi-skilled jobs, like butcher, carpenter, leathersmith, metalsmith, and many other occupations.

One of the false economies of slavery was that it was free labor. It was not. Slaves had to be fed, housed, clothed. Most slaves were bought on credit and interest would be due every year. When there was little work to be done in winter, a plantation owner would be "stuck" with the slaves. A slave owner could not make a profit keeping people all year when only six months of work was available, so slaves often did something else besides fieldwork in the off season.

Slaves did all the work on the plantation. To leave the plantation they had to have a pass and any slave off the plantation without a pass he/she was considered a runaway. In the south they worked the cotton from planting to picking. There was also some plantations that grew rice. The rice had very razor sharp leaves and the slaves would stand in water all day planting the rice. They had to deal with venomous snakes, the heat, the rice cutting their hands, and the damage to their skin from the water. Read the book To Be A Slave.
