Eugene Shoemaker and his wife were the first to see the Shoemaker-Levi 4 comet, which was pulled into Jupiter's gravitational pull and then torn apart into some 20 or so small rocks orbiting Jupiter. They also were the first to recognize that the 20 or so comets would collide with Jupiter.
