The best consequence is what happens naturally. If you don't wear your coat you will be cold. If you did not study for the test -you may make a grade less than expected. Sometimes others have to impose consequences. The best ones are designed to teach and address the behavior. Consequences do not have to be punitive or extreme to cause learning or changes in behavior. Research has shown that punishment does not teach. It may cause temporary compliance but as soon as the threat is removed the person may revert back to the same problem behaviors.
