ALMOST ALL OF THEM. It was a widely accepted practice in the Ancient world, slavery in some places are more understood than others because of the fact that the task of slaves were not properly recorded but we have reference of slavery in all of the following civilizations:

ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, ancient Rome, Ancient China, Ancient India, Ancient Persia, Among the Aztecs and Among the Mayans among others.

Slavery was also used in the new world, however in the new world racial boundaries were used only capturing people of African (black) stock.

The West coast of Africa used slaves as did The Portuguese, The British, The Americans and The Spanish.

How do you think abolisshing slavery would have affected Roman society?

Abolishing slavery would have affected the households of the rich and mining. Rich households had many slaves who did domestic and other jobs for them. Miners were slaves because this job was considered a death sentence. It would not have had a significant effect on agricultural production (the mainstay of the economy). Slaves in antiquity were enslaved war captives. When Rome fought wars of expansion she captured and enslaved many captives. Most of them were bought by the owners of large landed estates to work in their field. However: a) they also employed local seasonal agricultural labourers, b) most of the slaves went to Italy and many areas of the Roman Empire did not have slaves, including Egypt, which was the breadbasket of the empire. When Rome's imperial expansion stopped, the supply of slaves dwindled as there were no longer war captives. The large landlords came to rely more on local peasants who were hired as labourers or were tenants who paid a rent for their plots of land.

When did slave trading start?

Since the dawn of man there have been slaves. Slaves were ( still are) taken in war and raids. Pirates often sold slaves through out the world to Greek, Roman, and other civilizations. Slavery built many of the ancient cities and temples. Slavery still goes on today and is not something that has disappeared, but has only gone more or less underground. Children in many third world countries are sold into slavery for sex and war. Even in the United States slavery still exists. Often illegal immigrants are kept as slaves because they still owe for the passage to the United States. Young women are kept as sex slaves by pimps and sold back and forth. This is not something that is gone or in the past.

Why and how did slavery start?
