You can do a sideways split or a middle split.
A side ways split is when one leg is straight in front of you and the other is straight behind you.
A middle split is when both legs are straight to the right and left of you. Middle splits are harder to do, but if you practice every day, you will eventually get it.

STRETCH ! that's all that's going to help ! stretch every morning and every night before bed , when you're sitting in front of the tv , when you're doing homework , whenever you can ! if you don't know what to do to stretch then just practice doing and sitting in the splits as far down that you can hold for at least 12 seconds . then ask some friends to help stretch you . just practice practice practice . they will come !
Different people find different splits to be easiest. If one of your legs is more flexible than the other, that that first leg will probably be easiest for you. Middle splits could also be easier for some people.
If you have never done the splits before than all your legs might feel the same; to get good at any one position you have to practice and stretch regularly.
For right and left splits, stretch out your hamstrings. This could be straddle and going nose to knee on each side and then center. Also, stretching your pike helps a lot too. Also, do quad stretches such as holding your foot and putting your knees together. You can also do this laying on your side.
For your middle splits, stretch you hip flexors and inner theighs. For hip flexors, do leg swings and hip rolls. Also, get in lunge then put your knee to the ground, grab that foot, and push your hip forward. For inner thighs, prop up so your foot is in forced arch then sit on you heel. Extend the other leg and reach forward and then nose to knee.
My splits a year ago were awful. I started doing these stretches every day while I watched TV, so I would have stretched for 30 minutes without realizing it. I can now sit in all 3 splits all the way without pain; these stretches work! :D
Practice everyday.
I made a youtube video a while back if you want to check it out too.
