Ralph is a good leader (along with the help of Piggy) who tries to keep the boys on task and finds ways of allowing them to get home faster (example; the fire). Ralph has a lot of power and influence, this is partially because of his good looks. He is not as savage as most of the boys.

On the other hand Jack doesn't do things for the good of the group, he does whatever will fill his gut. He primarily represents savagery, violence and has a desire for power. By the middle of the book he casts off moral restraints.
