  • There are no reliable "signs" that a man is gay, although there are anecdotal or stereotypical indicators that do more to fuel gossip than anything else. We are rapidly approaching a time when simply asking a guy about it is more and more acceptable. If you are really concerned, and this is someone you know, privately ask him some time. He may be willing to be frank about it.
  • Some men may be effeminate and may appear gay when truly they weren't. Men who are muscular and act all male could well be gay as they hide the fact well. It is a myth that all gay people wear tight clothing; express themselves by hand feminine hand gestures or 'swish' their way through life. Being neat does not mean one is gay. If a female were to ask them out on a date they would most likely decline and may admit they are gay or may not. Some gay men may have female friends around them and get along well with them. There are some people who are bi-sexual and this is a little more difficult. Bisexuals are not gay and they experiment between both sexes. So, if you think they are you can come right out and ask them. Bisexuals are proud of the fact they are and usually have no problem expressing that fact.
  • Being attracted to people of the same sex. That is the only universal sign. If you're gay, you're gay.
  • If he is attracted to males, there is a chance that he is gay. If he is solely attracted to males (not to females at all), then he is gay. If you are wondering about someone else, the only real way to find out is to ask.
  • All or nearly all of the person's sexual partners and fantasies involve partners of the same sex.
  • They only way for sure is to ask them and get an answer.

These are NOT signs that someone is gay:

  • wearing clothes typical of the opposite sex
  • movements and gestures typical of the opposite sex (boys acting "femmy")
  • sensitivity in males or "aggressiveness" in females
  • higher-pitched voices in males or lower-pitched voices in females
  • interest in activities or occupations typical of the opposite sex
