A chamois (pronounced, more or less, "shammy" or "shamwa") is a goat-like animal, whose skin was used to make a kind of leather that was very smooth and absorbent and was used for cleaning, buffing, and polishing (also for gloves and jackets). Genuine chamois cloth is still made this way.
Artificial "shammies" are made of pig or goat skin, or entirely from synthetic materials (usually poly(vinyl alcohol) or viscose rayon).
