What are roofies? Rohypnol is a brand name for flunitrazepam, a tranquilizer similar to Valium, but more than 10 times stronger. It is a prescription drug not approved for sale in the U.S. Adverse effects associated with its use include decreased blood pressure, memory impairment, drowsiness, dizziness and confusion. Sedation can begin half an hour after ingestion and last several hours. It's the amnesia-producing effects of Rohypnol that make it the drug of choice for prospective rapists. Many cases have been reported, mostly in the South and California, of men slipping the drug into a drink of an unsuspecting female. The victim wakes up hours later, with partial or no memory of what happened. To make matters worse, Rohypnol is cheap - about $2 to $4 a tablet - and appears legitimate, as it is often distributed in its original manufacturer's packaging. However, all Rohypnol is smuggled into this country illegally. In addition to using the drug to gain power over others, high-school and college students are increasingly taking Rohypnol to lower inhibitions. It is often taken in combination with beer as an "alcohol extender."
Roofies are date rape drugs. It is also commonly known as Rohyphenol.
