Scrooge is a good example for us all ... until he runs afoul of the socialist ghosts!
Ebenezer Scrooge is an upstanding business man in the 1800's. He gives employment to several staff (his clerk, his housekeeper, and his cook). He offers his residence to other business people to set up shop, and he pays his taxes. There is no indication that he has ever been in trouble with the law. He has a wide standing with business men in his circle of fellow business people. He works a long day at his loans office.
He could best be described as a stoic. He does not put personal comfort ahead of common sense. He lives in a serviceable home which he inherited from Jacob Marley his busness partner and friend, he wears good quality clothes, he conserves fuel (both for energy savings and to reduce the coal smoke problem in London). He eats simple small meals featuring, among other things, oatmeal which is locally produced. He insists on honesty from others as well as himself - loans should be paid on time, a day's pay should be given for a day's work. He keeps himself fit by walking to work.
His social concerns for his friends and relatives is evident. He bemoans his nephew's spendthrift ways, he wants Bob Cratchit to consider the foolishness of not using Birth Control to limit his extensive family.
Unlike the "gentlemen" who come to visit him at his office he treats every day the same, not being overwhelmed by generosity for a brief period in December, then letting the poor be forgotten the rest of the year. In his discussion with them he names the several social institutions that he supports, with his taxes, the whole year through.

He mistook making of money as a sign of true success
