Traditionally, I think the term "Christmas carol" refers only to songs about the birth of Jesus. Obviously there are songs about Santa Claus, magic snowmen, and chestnuts roasting that have become part of the Christmas practice.

Also, I think "carol" at one time referred to songs accompanying a ring dance (dancers holding hands in a circle resemble the fence surrounding a CORRAL, as in "Shoot-out at the OK." Those dancing songs could also be about Jesus, of course.
