In West Africa the slavers were black chiefs. In East Africa, the slavers were Arabs, sometimes in cahoots with the black chiefs. One may presume that the prisoners tried to evade capture; but once taken, resistance was futile as they would be killed if they tried to escape.


Of course, there has been slavery throughout history, particularly in ancient Rome and Ancient Greece. China, Russia and Japan had medieval serfs until the 19th century, and these serfs were little better than slaves.


In Nazi Germany, many people became slave labourers. The word "Slav" means slave. Many countries still have slavery, particularly Arab states in North Africa and the Middle East.
