Author Darwin Porter, in his book 'Howard Hughes - Hell's Angel", seems to love revisionist history. Howard Hughes was not gay. Porter's 'secret knowledge' is commotion for the sake of making commotion. Read books on Hughes. Why isn't everyone saying he's gay? Answer: because he just wasn't gay.
Making something up to get attention for your book is not a new idea. If he was gay, in all fairness to the truth it should then be confirmed outright by multiple, undeniably accurate sources. Tabloids suggest things about the personal lives of stars all the time. In short, there are many historical figures that were homosexuals...Mr. Hughes was not one of them. If Hughes was with us today, Porter would probably be sued into the poor house. If he was gay, that's his personal business but I highly doubt Porter's credibility and sources. He was a secretive man and a fascinating person; this would not be the first time someone has written something fraudulent and sensationalist about Hughes (just ask Clifford Irving).
Given his well known affairs with multiple Hollywood starlets and given accounts by his ex-wives, he was very much straight. Believe what you want, but do in-depth research especially on this topic. Howard Hughes was a very multifaceted character and has become a hero of sorts (he was the inspiration for Tony Stark of 'Ironman', movies like 'The Aviato'r are still being made about him, he appears in fiction often such as 'The Rocketeer' and 'Diamonds are Forever' as Willard Whyte and even Video Games like Fallout New Vegas). Due to his love of secrecy and instance of staying out of the public eye in later years, so much is not known about Mr. Hughes and so it is very easy to suggest things or even make things up completely - and as I said before it's fertile ground for fiction. Hughes demand for privacy almost attracts such allegations but in this case I'd say it is sound to say he's not gay - or rather there is no verifiable evidence of that.
