Transfer from rogers to Fido

Transferring from Rogers to Fido requires you to, in essence, cancel your Rogers contract and sign a new contract with Fido. You can keep your phone number but Rogers will penalize you for cancelling their contract. The question is, how much will they charge you? If you cancel a Rogers contract to move to any other provider, we are told, the regular penalty is in the neighbourhood of $400. If, however, you are migrating to Fido the charge is closer to $100 (it used to be free, but that apparently ended Jan 09). There is some suggestion that you can sweet talk a customer retention rep into waiving the $100 but that's not a given.

Fido uses the Rogers network, which in our experience here in Alberta has been the best.

Here's our analysis of our situation:

Our Rogers current contract runs out in Oct 09

It does not provide unlimited texting, and to add this to the Rogers contract would increase our bill by $15 per month

Between now and Oct that means an additional $105 in charges

The cancellation fee is supposed to be about $100

Our current monthly charge is $40

The Fido fee with unlimited texting is $25

So, between Apr and Oct we will spend $40 per month, plus $15 for unlimited texting with Rogers, for a total of $385

Over that same period we will spend $175 for the same services with Fido, plus a cancellation fee of $100, for a total of around $275

Move makes sense to us!
