The urterine lining thickens during menstruation in order to shed, making way for the new layer to build up in hopes of a zygote burying into the wall.
This is because during menstruation, the blood would be also be accompanied by the sloughed off lining of the uterus, cervical mucus and some vaginal secretions. These elements give it a thick consistency and the dark red color.
