Setting
  • Setting begins to occur after the concrete is mixed and even before pouring. The cement in the concrete begins to stiffen after mixed with water. The concrete is beginning to change from liquid form to solid form. During the setting process, the concrete does gain strength, which is the beginning of the hardening process. When the water ingredient is added to the concrete mix, the concrete is still pliable and flexible, sort of a paste. There is two stages of setting: initial and final setting. Initial setting is when the concrete loses it flexibility and begins to harden. Final setting is when the concrete can sustain some load, but still has some moisture within the mixture.

Hardening
  • Hardening of the concrete is the stage when the mixture gains strength. The cement ingredient begins to attach itself to the aggregate as the water dries off the mixture. The hydration of water is what starts the hardening process. It generally takes five to seven days for the concrete to complete the hardening process. The easiest way to increase the strength of concrete is to add cement to the mixture. The more water used in the mixture, the weaker the concrete and it will also delay the hardening process. Once the concrete has hydrated all the water from the mixture, the hardening process is complete and the concrete is as strong as it will get.

What hydroxide is in cement?

Calcium hydroxide is one of the key compounds found in cement. It forms during the hydration process of cement when water is added to the cement mixture, leading to the setting and hardening of the material.

What is hardening of concrete?

Cement when mixed with sufficient quantity of water, the compounds present in cement reacts with water to form a cementitious crystalline structure that adheres to the sand and aggregates. This helps in binding the mass together and increases its strength till it becomes very hard. This is called hardening of cement.

Cement hardening an example of melting?

Cement hardening is not an example of melting. Melting involves a substance changing from a solid to a liquid state due to heat, while cement hardening is a chemical process where the cement mixture reacts and forms bonds to create a rigid solid structure.

Is concrete hardening an example of chemical or physical change?

Concrete hardening is an example of a chemical change. When water is added to the cement mixture, a chemical reaction occurs between the water and the cement particles, resulting in a new substance with different properties than the original components.

Why should cement be stored in dry conditions?

Cement should be stored in dry conditions to prevent it from absorbing moisture, which can affect its setting and curing process. Moisture can cause clumping or hardening of the cement, reducing its effectiveness. Storing cement in a dry environment helps to maintain its quality and ensure proper performance when it is used.

What difference between psc cement opc cement?

Psc is always first choice because psc cement gives more strength than opc and also psc cement setting time is slower not that much it will give same strength in 28 days... Because of slower setting cracks will not appear or there is very less chance to appear cracks and it will requires lesser curing than opc..
