well, it all depends on what your preference is. I would recommend that you get the feel of both of them before you make the investment, by going and shooting both types of guns a couple times. your physical build also affects which you should consider purchasing, if you have a weak shoulder or want to avoid that sore shoulder, you would go with the 20 guage, because as the guage gets higher, the round is smaller and lighter. a 12 guage will leave you sore if you plan on using it even for a single round of trap. the type of shooting you plan to do is another factor. if you want to do quail hunting and other waterfowl, a 12 guage might rip them apart. and a 20 guage just might not be enough to stop a buck (i don't really know if you can hunt buck with a 20 or not, just saying). if youre interested in trap shooting (with clays) a single shot 20 guage will do just fine (which is a cheap alternative to a 12 guage for trap). if you plan on sporting clays or skeet, a two barreled 12 guage (over under, side by side) is what i usually see being used, or a pump ( i recommend a Remington 870 as a 12 guage starting pump, you can buy parts for them just about anywhere, and they have a sweet starting price at under $300).
