If you are referring to a new firmware when you say "a new version" then no, it will no longer be jailbroken and will require you to jailbreak it once more. If you are asking this in relation to the 4.0 firmware you can still jailbreak it using a jailbreak tool called Redsn0w which can also allow you to not only install Cydia, but also enable multitasking, enable springboard (background) wallpaper, alter your boot logo, alter your recovery logo, and/or toggle a "verbose boot". It is a very good software, but please take the time to watch a tutorial/instructional video before attempting to use it should it be your first time.

Only install cydia and enable battery percentage then click next DO NOT boot tethered or you will have to jailbreak it every time you reboot it or it goes dead. 6. Put your device in DFU mode then just leave it. 7. make sure the device does not get unplugged during the process or you will have a broken ios device and you want a jailbroken. let the jailbreak do its thing and if the device does get unplugged just hold the power and home button for about 30 seconds. 8. you should have a jailbroken ipod touch or iphone

the boot you can tell with a visual inspection. there should be no tears in the boot. the boot is there to keep grease in and debris out. if the boot is torn and most of the grease is gone you probably should replace the shaft. if you catch it soon enough though you can just replace the boot which is much cheaper.

No. If you erase all content and settings while you are jailbroken, your device will go into an infinite boot loop, and you will have to wait for it to die to plug it in and restore it from iTunes. It's never a good idea.
