For full service hotels, those with bars in them, you must be 21, it's the law in Michigan, most other hotels in the state have a company policy of 21 but what I normally do, being 20 is call a hotel without a bar and talk to the general manager of the hotel they will normally either let you stay as long as your not with a huge group of people or acting stupid, they might request to have your parent or gardian fax a copy of their credit card and I.D. to hold on record just incase you trash the room, if you donnt want to involve your parents you can go to a no-name hotel and they normally won't even ask for your I.D., but then your staying in a crappier hotel

The actual law states a hotel/motel doesn't have to rent to a person under 18 (unless they are legally emancipated) and can ask for ID -

however to avoid liability - a hotel can chose to not rent to someone under 21 as alcohol could cause problems if consumed in the room,
