Of course any physical activity is good for you and walking is a good exercise that most people are capable of doing. That being said, walking 8 miles per week is not enough exercise for most, and not nearly enough for weight loss. On average, one burns about 100 calories when walking a mile (give or take depending on weight, body compostition, age, gender and metabolism). Walking 8 miles a week burns about 800 calories, which is equivalent to a milkshake. For most people, burning that many calories in a week will not create enough of a defecit for weight loss. If you chose to use walking as your primary form of exercise, ensure that you are "speed" or "power" walking: walk at a fast pace (at least 3.5 mph) and swing your arms, and aim for at least 3 miles per day.
