The space between the vocal cords is called the glottis and the folding that covers this space while swallowing is called the epiglottis. As for the pharynx, is the part of the throat that leads to the esophagus and the trachea. the trachea ( the windpipe) is the tube that connects the pharynx and larynx to the lungs.
