You can get the cartilage pierced regardless of your being an athlete or not. It is your choice. I personally do not understand why people pierce themselves.
You mark the spot you want and get a piercing needle on ebay. Then once you have the spot clean and the needle you just push it in then put a ring or stud in right after. Make sure to clean it twice a day with warm water and a tablespoon of sea salt for 10 minutes each time
For the actual piercing, about a second. Needles go through pretty quickly. Of course, they'll have to mark the spot where you want it, and maybe put on clamps. Cartilage piercings don't take long to mark out compared to daiths or rooks. The jewelery switch doesn't take long either.
