Of course it is. The term Mulatto typically meant a person of a white and black parentage or of two Mulatto parents. And like Whites and Blacks, Mulattos tend to vary in appearance, facial features, and color tone of skin from darker to lighter.

Mulattos from different parts of the world have a diverse background of even more than just White and Black heritage. For example many Mulattos in the Caribbean often have a lot of Indigenous/Indian ancestry as well. Some Mulattos in throughout the Mediterranean may have Spanish, Moroccan, and Arabic blood. The Dominican Republic tends to have Mulattos of Spanish, black and Indian backgrounds. While the small Mulatto groups in Haiti will have French European and black heritage. It is in these areas such as the Dominican Republic that Mulattos can also descend from 2 Mulatto parents as well.

American Mulattos are some of the most interestingly diversed as they themselves tend to come from one White parent who might have Native-American or Asian heritage and one Black parent who are themselves 15-18 percent White. Some Multiracial Creole mulattos may be even more diverse than this!

Mulattos make up a big majority in nations such as the Dominican Republic (72% Mulatto), Cuba (51% Mulatto), Brazil (Nearly 40% Mulatto) and other parts of South America and the Caribbean.

Unfortunately Mulatto identity, especially in the U.S., has come under fire from many racist laws passed. (ie One drop rule, Racial Integrity Laws, etc, etc). This is a long standing crime as Mulattos have had their own culture, heroes, celebrities, and even communities at one point which were eradicated. In addition Mulattos have a noble tradition for they were known to even fight for both sides of the Civil War. Often they would also fight for other races such as the Whites in South Africa, Hispanics in Mexico, and blacks in the U.S.

Many people would use the scapegoat argument that they deny Mulatto race identity because the term Mulatto sounds "offensive". Ironically this opinion is often voiced by people who aren't even Mulattos. Plus these same opponents don't mind cattle branding Mulattos as black in accordance to old racist laws passed by the Klan and other racist groups.

It is because of little to none Mulatto representation in the U.S. that many people in North America and Europe remain oblivious to the Bi-racial Mulatto identity itself.
