I'm pretty certain the character wasn't; I can't recall any indications that he was, and it would have been pretty unusual for a 1970s sitcom to have had a gay character who wasn't stereotypically "flaming" and played for laughs.

Demond Wilson, who played Lamont Sanford, while it's POSSIBLE, if it is true he's done an extremely good job of covering it up: he's a Christian minister who has been married to the same woman since the 70s, with whom he has six children.
