Probably was. He was involved in a scene (bodybuilding) at a time when the pursuit of it could also be a refuge from social condemnation about "deviant" sexual practices. Lalanne's era of bodybuilding was much more gymnastics based and more natural muscular development. It was no secret that gay men enjoyed hanging out at Muscle Beach for obvious reasons. Lalanne got involved with Photographer Russ Warner in the late 40s. Warner did typical muscle man portraits for magazines etc, but also had a portfolio on the side of his "artistic" shots of naked bodybuilders. Jack Lalanne was a favorite subject, either photographed solo, or doing outdoor acrobatics with equally nude Jack Thomas. These images undoubtedly made money for all involved, but "art students" were not their intended patrons. Lalanne also sustained his Oakland Gym by offering massage on the side, and has admitted (Playboy interview) that his clientele were gay men and were likely repetitive clients. But even all of that aside, he could have appeared on his TV exercise show in sweat pants and Chuck Taylor sneakers, that stuff existed, but chose instead to wear a custom fitting jumpsuit and Ballet slippers. And would sign off by blowing kisses to "mother" not unlike Liberace. In his 1962 book "Foods for Glamour" he uses the term "Glamour" interchangeably with Men as well as woman. And writes a chapter on his weekend spent with "romantic movie star" Gilbert Roland and how "handsome" he is. In another book he espouses manicures for men and tries, but fails, by using the most macho language he can to emphasize the importance of lovely nails for men. He would have been an obvious sex symbol for woman, yet there seem to be only photographs of him with men in existence (other than Elaine, his wife) And in the late 70's, when his image was threatened by those old nude photos, he launched into an overcompensating diatribe against "homosexuals" and "boy prostitutes" reflecting the typical self-loathing that many gay men in the public sphere displayed at that time.
