In another book he espouses manicures for men and tries, but fails, by using the most macho language he can to emphasize the importance of lovely nails for men. He would have been an obvious sex symbol for woman, yet there seem to be only photographs of him with men in existence (other than Elaine, his wife) And in the late 70's, when his image was threatened by those old nude photos, he launched into an overcompensating diatribe against "homosexuals" and "boy prostitutes" reflecting the typical self-loathing that many gay men in the public sphere displayed at that time.
