There are two occasions when its ok to give out a V.I.N number... 1)If you are asked for it by a garage or dealership who are trying to order a part for the vehicle in question. 2)If you are selling a vehicle and the buyer wants to conduct a "stolen vehicle report" or background check on it. A V.I.N number is not usually needed for this purpose, however. Oh, and of course, if you are asked by a copper to prove that the vehicle retains its proper V.I.N plate, but that doesnt happen very often as they know all they need to from the Registration number. Best policy is not to go giving I.D numbers of any kind out to just anyone. V.I.N plates can be counterfeited the same as Registration plates. Satisfy yourself as to the trustworthiness of the person you are giving the number to before you release it.
