It's totally okay to say hi to him. Just don't get into anything personal to bother him. Sometimes just a smile when you walk past him shows that your not there to annoy him. If he's your friend and you guys are tight, then ask if he wants to talk.(that's normally what friends do). I'm sure he would appreciate it being your friend.
