Yes it is illegal to own a gun that does not have a serial number. It is also illegal to remove the serial number off a gun.
all colt SAA pistols have serial numbers. If the serial number was filed off then the gun is Illegal to have, and without serial can't tell when made...............
IF it HAS a serial number, it will be stamped on the receiver (frame) usually on the left side (as you are holding the shotgun). However, serial numbers were not required by law on shotguns and rifles until the 1968 Gun Control Act. Prior to that most low cost firearms were not sequentially numbered, due to the cost to the maker. It is not illegal to own a firearm without a serial number, but it IS illegal to remove a serial number, or possess a gun whose serial number has been removed.
Rifles and shotguns were not required to HAVE a serial number until the 1968 Gun Control Act. Many of the J C Higgins branded guns sold by Sears were made before then. And yes, it is perfectly legal in the US to own a gun that never HAD a serial number- but illegal to remove a serial number.
Rifles and shotguns made before the 1968 Gun Control Act became law were not required to have a serial number. Yes, it is perfectly legal to own a gun that never had a serial number. It is, however, VERY illegal to REMOVE a serial number.
With just the serial number, nothing.
It would be almost impossible to identify a gun just by its serial number.
Just by the serial number, no.
Impossible to answer. A serial number is not unique to only one gun in the world.
Impossible to date a gun with just the serial number and no other informaiton.
The serial number is on the frame.
