We have those laws because our country was founded as a Republic, governed by ordinary people, and not by a monarchy. Those firearms in the hands of the citizens were what made that possible. The type of government has little to do with it, it is the will of the people. Most countries choose not to have unnecessary armament in the home environment and so legislate against casual ownership.
