In 1998, the second time George W. Bush ran for Governor of Texas, Rick Perry ran for Lt. Governor. He won the election with 3.8% more votes than his nearest opponent, Democrat John Sharp, becoming George W. Bush's second Lt. Governor. So when George W. Bush resigned on 21 December 2000 due to winning the U.S. Presidential Election, Rick Perry automatically became Governor. Gov. Perry ran for reelection in 2002, and he won with 44.6% more votes than his nearest opponent, Democrat Tony Sanchez. Gov. Perry ran for reelection again in 2006, and he won with 31.0% more votes than his nearest opponent, Democrat Chris Bell. In December 2008, Gov. Perry broke the record for the longest time in office of any Texas Governor to date. In 2010, Gov. Perry ran for reelection again, and he won with 30.0% more votes than his nearest opponent, Democrat Bill White. There are no term limits in Texas, so Gov.
