This is because the anus and rectum has many microscopic structures known as intestinal villi and microvilli. These increase the surface area of the anatomy making it easier to absorb particles and viruses.

As long as sufficient protection is used (condom and water-based lubricant) homosexual intercourse can be safe and healthy.
