Spain began sending African slaves to South America, where they had founded colonies, in the 1500's, or more particularly, around 1510. Before this, the Spainards in South America used the Native Americans as slaves. However, African slaves were more used to rigerous farm work and heat, so they worked longer and harder than the Native Americans.
Slavery in Spain dates back to Roman times, when slaves were used for labor and domestic work. During the Middle Ages, slavery continued to be practiced, with captives from raids and warfare being enslaved. The transatlantic slave trade also brought enslaved Africans to Spain and its colonies in the Americas from the 16th to 19th centuries.
Delaware abolished slavery in 1865, following the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution that officially outlawed slavery in all states.
Cuba abolished slavery on October 7, 1886, through the Moret Law, which granted freedom to all slaves in the country.
The Dutch did participate in the transatlantic slave trade and slavery. They were one of several European nations involved in the transportation and exploitation of African slaves during the colonial period.
Maryland abolished slavery in 1864 with the passage of the state constitution.
In 1886, Spain officially abolished slavery in its remaining colonies, such as Cuba and Puerto Rico, although there were reports of continued exploitation. The recognition of slaves as legally free individuals marked the end of institutionalized slavery in the Spanish Empire.
