The slaves saw the north as an escape from slavery during the early 1700's. Most of the slaves were owned in the south of the United States and a slave had a chance at freedom in the north.
In the 1700's most African Americans were slaves. Those that were in northern colonies were free, but did have discrimination. In Florida in St. Augustine slaves could escape there and find compete freedom. They could own land, have businesses, and go to school.

From America, slave-produced goods such as cotton, rum and molasses were shipped to Europe, completing this slave triangle. This continued into the 1700s.
