The best thing is honesty and you could say something like: "You know, we've been good friends for a long while, but I am caring about you more and more and realize that friendship and love are the two best things you can have in life. I think they are one in the same thing. Do you want to try going out on a date and see where it ends up?" Put the ball in his court and if he says no, then you'll have to remain friends (you won't lose your dignity or be embarrassed) and there is a good chance he feel's a lot for you and there you have it ... dating!
