Hormonal Birth Control works by suppressing your menstrual cycles, so you don't ovulate and thus in turn you don't menstruate (the bleeding you get on the pill is a withdrawal bleed caused by the drop in synthetic hormones when going from active to inactive pills). It's normal to have irregular bleeding for the first three months on any new hormonal birth control while your body adjusts to this change. If this is occurring past three months then you need to ask to switch.
