slave scramble was when the slaves were placed on the boat and men were on one side and women on the other and at the sound of a gun men would dash onto the ship and grab as may slaves as possible
Historically, slavery began in Biblical times with Jews being slaves to the Egyptians in Ancient Egypt. They were slaves to the Pharoahs. Slavery started because someone thought they had the right and power to enslave another human being, usually for economic gain. For example, slaves built the Pyramids. Colonial United States just continued centuries of someone in power believing they could own another person. Britan practiced slavery and indenturehood-- and thus, when colonists came to America, they continued what they knew, except that people discovered tons of free labor in Africa. The first white man who physically took an African woman or forced African men onto ships continued centuries of practices of overwhelming a country and taking by force. Britan saw a huge need for their elite citizens who moved to America to have free labor. Thus, slavery was inevitable. Ironically, American settlers did NOT try to enslave American Indians, at least not en mass. Perhaps one reason was that Native Americans fought back with scalpings etc. Perhaps Europeans thought of Indians as "savages" and less able to be taught that the black slaves. Or, perhaps the Europeans suspected that if they took Indians as slaves, they would anger and incite ALL the Indian tribes... at a time when white men wanted Indian lands.

Native American's were NOT moved onto reservations in the great plains in the early 1800's, it was the late 1800's. They were moved there for the same reasons they were always pushed into these areas; the US Government and its people wanted their land and its natural resources.
Slaves resisted slavery in many personal ways as well as more bolder, public ways. They are as follows: -They used African American churches, which they were sometimes but rarely permitted to attend, to sing songs promoting equality and hope, two things they could only dream of without the gift of music and the church - They occasionally stirred up slave rebellions, such as in the case of Nat Turner at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. - They occasionally, as is obvious, escaped their masters (which was difficult to do). Slaves also held onto their culture and appreciated the values of family, which brough them closer to other blacks, free OR captive. Hope it helped! Ari
