They started in the 50's and still make them. The older ones have a serial number that starts with a T or S. The older ones also have a chrome flap on the underside, the new ones have a black mag flap.
The ones beginning in T or S are the older made guns. The 870 was created in the 50's.

The old ones(60's, 70's, 80's) have the smoothest action from a pump action. They are still the best pump action shotgun on the market, in my opinion. I've got one.

I saw used ones at LL Bean, and Bass Pro Shop in good to excellent condition for $200 to $250 dollars just a few months ago.
I'm not sure on the price but it is a very good gun for a 13 year old I know a few teens that use them they are one of the best field gun ever made
