Federal law is 18 for long guns, 21 for hand guns.
One thing I will state is that in NZ where I am from you don't have to be 18.
But in Virginia I just reseached and you can sell a rifle or shotgun(defined by federal law) to anyone over 12 years of age.Handguns can be sold, transfered or otherwise supplied to anyone under 21 by a member of their family(E.G Father or Mother). You have to be 21 for a concealed carry permit and unless you have one,you can only purchase 1 New handgun a month(Unless you get it through a private sale, gun show etc). They ranked C-Minus in a recent study for the scale of their firearms legislation/laws(A is toughest New york,California,D.O.C etc F being most liberal Texas,Vermont,Nevada etc).
Hope this information helped as it wasn't a Copy & Paste job.I did the research my self and have the credible two-page article from "The Raw Story" link provided here:

If you are a resident of Virginia, and not prohibited from owning a gun, you may buy a gun from any other resident of Virginia. This applies in MOST states. If you are not a resident of Virginia, then you may buy a rifle or shotgun from a Virginia dealer, but not a private citizen. This is addressed in Federal law- US Code 18.922

Federal law says 21 to buy a handgun and 18 to buy a long gun. Federal law says 21 to buy a handgun and 18 to buy a long gun. Unless Through Private sales,Gun shows and private transfer. Many states also allow minors to buy firearms.Although I have forgotten precisley which ones,I know Texas,Virginia,Nevada and Maybe Florida allow it. No point placing an age limit on firearms.
