Through much experimentation with many fat loss methods (High Intensity Interval Training, exercise, weight training, dieting, eating multiple small meals a day, etc), I have concluded the fastest (by far) and actually one of the healthiest ways to lose fat is to exactly do as the question asks. Don't eat! A water fast gives you results like no other fat loss method.

I am a very fit an healthy person, but carried a bit too much excess fat. I began a water fast. In 15 days, I lost 10.3kgs (22.7 pounds) of fat and less than 1kg of muscle. That is a fat loss of approx 680g/day or 1.5 pounds/day. This is a because after 2-3 days of fasting, your body goes into Ketosis where it switches to purely fat as an energy source. Once in Ketosis, your body will preserve muscle.

Many "experts" suggest increasing your metabolic rate is the best way to lose fat. It is true with a very good diet, you will lose weight slowly this way. When you fast, yes, your metabolic rate does slow down, so experts may argue that you will put on fat straight after a fast. This more depends on your diet and exercise regime. As far as metabolic rate goes, it increases and decreases very quickly based on your lifestyle.

What makes water fasting so beneficial to your body is:

- causes your body to go through a major detox as toxins stored in fat are released

- it is the best way to heal sicknesses and diseases in your body. When you eat, your body's focus is on digesting. When you fast, your body's focus is on healing.

I do not suggest doing a water fast till you do further research on the best way to proceed. There is much information on the internet.

Also remember, for men your stomach is the last place you lose fat from. Visceral (internal) fat will disappear first, then subcutaneous (external) fat will go last. Once you start losing subcutaneous fat, it will first come off from the other areas of your body first and slowly migrate toward your stomach.

With women, they tend to lose subcutaneous fat first & if they finish the fast (or weight loss regime) early, they may still be left with still lots of visceral fat.
