In the 1960's there was the Gyrojet gun which were actually miniature rockets but the caliber was larger than the .223 round of the M16
Noop. an M16 fires a 5.56mm (or .223 caliber) bullet. A .45 caliber shoots a bullet that is ~11.43mm.
Bullets alone have no velocity. The .223 CARTRIDGE, when fired from an M16 rifle, will drive its bullet at about 3,200 fps. However, velocity depends on the makeup of the cartridge (powder charge, bullet weight) , and which firearm it is fired from.
5.56
5.56mm packs a punch. It's stopping power is good, but a gun like the MG3 can easily outkill an M16 with its 7.62mm rounds.
The bullet energy from the AK 47 is higher than a round from an M16 or M4. That doesn't mean it is necessarily a better weapon. The AK 47 is very reliable but the M16 is much more accurate.
The US military's primary infantry weapon for training is the M16. Just remember that when you enter bootcamp that you dont call the M16 your "gun".. The M16 is your "weapon"
The M16 and the M4 are the US designations for the AR-15 pattern of rifles.
