What most people CALL an assault rifle is nothing but a semi-automatic rifle, and in most of the US, does not require a license to possess.
The FAL isn't an assault rifle - it's a battle rifle. For an actual full auto, transferable, NFA rifle, be prepared to part with about $15,000 or more. For a pre-ban semi auto LAR (which is what the semi auto civilian version was called), expect to shell out $3500 - $4000. For a post ban, 922r compliant "Frankengun", $700 - $1300, depending on manufacturer.
