In 1860 Alabama, there were 600,000 ton of cotton gown by the slaves and shipped to the Europeans
There were about 400,000 bales of cotton grown and produced in 1860. This number was so high because of the invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney.

The Cotton Gin dramatically changed life in the south, by impacting the lives of every cotton plantation owner, and in turn the whole economy of the south. The Cotton Gin is a machine used to separate cotton seeds from the fibers. This increased production dramatically, and suddenly it became much easier to grow and prepare bales of cotton. The faster production of cotton meant that more cotton could be grown, and in turn cotton became less expensive. More people could afford to switch their clothing from flax to cotton. Before cotton was only for the rich. Unfortunately, there was a downside to the start of the Industrial Revolution. More cotton grown meant that more slaves were needed to grow and harvest the cotton. This made it so that nearly one-third of all southerners were slaves.

2 thirds of the worlds supply of cotton in 1860
more than your worth lol
By 1860, cotton fueled the Southern economy and helped the Northern textile mills. Two thirds of the world's cotton was produced by the Southern plantations. The northern textile mills were effected by the disruption of the US Civil War in that by 1860, mills sold $100 million worth of cloth made from cotton.
Cotton slaves picked around 150-200 pounds of cotton a day per person.
The cotton gin allowed the growers to grow more cotton. Before the gin was invented the cotton seeds were hard to get out of the boll. The cotton boll is closely packed and very hard to get all the seeds removed and they had to do it by hand. The gin had teeth that when they were turned the handle it pulled the cotton apart and the seeds fell to the bottom. By having the ability to do this they could grow more cotton, buy more slaves to pick/process the cotton, and they could sell more cotton. Most of the cotton was sold to the Britain and when the civil war started the southern states expected it to help them because of the cotton. They didn't need it since they had bought so much all ready. The plantations really began to grow because of the invention and the population of slaves also grew. People became very rich and the south more powerful.
Actually the invention of the cotton gin made the growth of more cotton possible which also meant that more slaves were needed to pick, grow, and process the cotton. The statistics show a direct relationship between the amount of cotton grown to the population of slaves.

Prior to the invention of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney separating the cotton seeds from the fibers took a great deal of work making cotton not very profitable. Some even believed that slavery would collapse as an effective system simply because of unprofitably. The invention of the cotton gin made it much easier to separate the seeds from the fibers so much more cotton could be produced. this caused slavery to expand rapidly in the American south.
